Steeple Bumpstead Primary School

Welcome to Mathematics

About Our Maths Curriculum

At Steeple Bumpstead Primary School, we want every child to become a confident and successful mathematician. Our curriculum develops secure mathematical knowledge, fluent calculation skills and the ability to reason, explain and solve problems.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, we use CUSP Maths. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build strong foundations and regularly revisit important knowledge. Lessons include clear teaching, practical resources, mathematical talk and plenty of opportunities to practise and apply new skills.

In Key Stage 2, we follow White Rose Maths. Children work through learning in carefully planned steps, developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than simply learning procedures. They use concrete resources, pictures and written methods to help them make connections and explain their thinking.

Across the school, children are encouraged to:

  • develop fluency with number facts and calculations
  • use accurate mathematical vocabulary
  • explain and justify their ideas
  • spot patterns and make connections
  • apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving tasks
  • learn from mistakes and approach challenges with resilience

Teachers use regular assessment to identify what children understand and where further support or challenge is needed.

Our aim is for every child to leave Steeple Bumpstead with secure mathematical foundations, confidence in their own ability and the skills they need for the next stage of their education.
